Revising Date Spans in Name Headings The PCC list has had an interesting discussion on the topic of what to do about month and day additions to a birth date when adding a death date to close an open ended date span in a heading. In other words, when revising the heading *Whiplash, Snidely, $d 1876 Dec. 15-*is the result Whiplash, Snidely, $d 1876 Dec. 15-1944, or Whiplash, Snidely, $d 1876-1944 In NACO training, we have continued the practice that the addition of the death date makes the heading unique and that the month and date are no longer necessary. I can not identify any documentation for this practice. I have consulted with the Policy and Standards Division (formerly CPSO). They feel that either practice is allowable. The important matters are: (1) One should follow LCRI 26.1 in regards to the references and (2) One should not revise a heading simply in order to delete a month and date when a death date has been added by another NACO member. This has the result of creating double BFM for all. Anthony R.D.
