Probably more of an AFS issue. I think you is missing a pts entry
for this principal.

I don't remember the kerberos 4 mapping to AFS mapping
in AFS off my head, you need to check that with the afs folks.

If you run kinit like this: kinit [argument] principal command -- 
command-arguments
kinit will renew you tickets before they are about to expire (and  
renew afs tokens too)
