Ah, I think I get it, now. Is the gap to eliminate the friction of 
the crank against the base of the neck of the knob (inner end of the 
knob)?

Matt, I can't picture what the "1/8 inch gap between the inner end 
of the knob and the crank" means. Please explain a little further, 
if you think it an important point.
