Battle of Lepanto, Korean War, Achille Lauro Hijack

----------------------------------------------------------------------

October 7, 1571
In the last great naval battle featuring galleys, the Ottoman navy
under Ali Pasha was defeated at the Battle of Lepanto by a 316-ship-
strong Christian coalition under the overall command of Spain's Don
Juan de Austria. Fought off of the southwestern coast of Greece, the
battle ended the threat of Ottoman naval supremacy in the
Mediterranean.

One of the soldiers who fought at Lepanto was the Spanish writer
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra:

The UN General Assembly passed a resolution that that approved a US-
led UN force to advance north of 38th parallel into North Korea,
ignoring China's threat to enter the war if the parallel was
crossed. The 38th parallel divided North from South Korea, a
division established in 1945. After a death toll of tens of
thousands three years later, the war ended with the reestablishment
of the 38th parallel division.

Four Palestinians hijacked the Achille Lauro, an Italian cruise ship
navigating off the coast of Egypt. After demanding the release of 50
Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, the hijackers killed one of the
passengers. They later surrendered in exchange for safe passage, but
fighter planes intercepted the plane that carried them to the Middle
East and forced it to land in Sicily, where the Palestinians were
captured.

In 1990 a movie was released on the hijacking of the Achille Lauro:
