SAN FRANCISCO -- Workers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium have been trying to capture a lightning-quick mantis shrimp that has been wreaking havoc for months in a coral reef exhibit.

Only the shells remain from prized sea snails, barnacles and hermit crabs. Workers suspect the shrimp got into the tank after burrowing into a shipment of display rocks shipped from Florida.

South African man bites python, escapes death

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- On Wednesday, a South African newspaper reported that a man escaped the tightening grip of a python snake by biting it.

"I decided the only way to save myself from this monster was to bite it just below the head," the man told the paper.

Phone company prints pornographic URL on phone books

NASSAU, Bahamas -- A mass recall of telephone books is underway in the Bahamas after the Web address of a pornographic site was printed on the cover of more than 170,000 directories.

Customers waited in line Tuesday for government workers to collect their phone book, cross out the address with a black marker and hand it back to them.

TOKYO, Japan -- A 444-pound bluefin tuna fetched a whopping $173,600 at the first auction of the year on Friday in Tokyo's main fish market.

The $391 per pound fish will likely be sold as raw sushi, a delicacy that can command a price of more than $100 for a plate of slices.

    A career in roadkill

(CNN) -- Add Charles Brannon to those whose jobs are harder lately because of the unusually harsh winter. Brannon has a contract to pick up and dispose of dead deer along state roads in four counties of northeastern Pennsylvania.

"A hot deer and the cold pavement -- they freeze instantly to the surface," Brannon laments. "You can't even chisel them off -- I've tried that. There's really nothing you can do."
