A foreigner appeared in Vancouver this week to unleash a torrent of
abuse at Canada and Canadians. Canadians "remain resolutely oblivious to
their country's objective decline," he said. Canada has not "evolved to
a more confident, spontaneous, individualistic, enterprising and
unenvious society." His renunciation of Canadian citizenship -- did we
mention this is Conrad Black, who had that bitter row with Prime
Minister Jean Chr�tien? -- was "an act of patriotism" and the casting
off of "an impediment to my progress in another, more amenable
jurisdiction."

Since seeking refuge in Britain, Mr. Black has of course acquired the
title Lord Black of Crossharbour. We always knew what views he
harboured. We hadn't realized he was quite this cross
