Wow, welcome to the list...um...the only thing I could think of is you've got permissions set wrong...but i'm not sure what device (is there a /dev/keyboard device guys?) and why it wouldn't be set right... I should just briefly introduce myself before firing away my first (and I'm sure there will be more in the near future). My name is Matt Norton, I'm a grad student at the Universite de Montreal, and I'm a new Linux user. I'd thought about it for some time over the last couple of years (particularly the last 12 months), but while working on a conference presentation over the holidays, my Win OS was crashing at least twice daily, and that was the last straw. I am now working as much as I can in Linux, and trying to learn. Now that the pleasantries are done, I can go forward with the question. When I log in as root, my keyboard works fine, but with any other user profile, I get an error from xkbcomp saying bad geometry, and thus giving me a pre-XKB keyboard with no backspace. I looked at the Keyboard HOWTO, but no answer seemed self evident. Anyway, I'm running RedHat 5.2 (2.0.36 Kernel) on a I-3000. Any thoughts?
