did you reinitialize lilo? go type lilo at a prompt as root. if that's not it, make sure you are using the new kernel. also, it's a good idea NOT to overwrite your old kernel unless you are sure it's working 100 percent. if you have a lack of hd space, remove it.. whatever, but if you have the 500k to spare, copy the old kernel to vmlinuz-2.0.xx or whatever and re-reference it in the lilo.conf file and then run lilo again. keep in mind that the top billing in lilo.conf is the default boot.
