Thanks, Peter! -- running /sbin/lilo was all that was needed. Actually, I didn't think I needed to run lilo, as I'd kept /vmlinuz as the kernel image label (renaming the old one) and, as I have the System Commander boot loader installed and use that to boot linux (or windows 95, occasionally). I'd recompiled the kernel several times before to reconfigure it in various ways and hadn't had a problem. Oh well, now I know better!
