See http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Dutch_proverbs My experience is that 'making things simpler' is one of the most difficult jobs that exist, but sometimes if you rewrite code you've written "the hard way" (for instance to make it fit into the most recent iText version), you can reduce complexity because of what you've learned in your first try (IIRC it's one of the principles of eXtreme Programming). So I'd say: don't give up!
