Mea culpa! I didn't see the part you had added below the close of your message.

Now, please open the choicefields.pdf example from the book, via the link I 
provided, and see if it exhibits the behavior you don't want. BTW, I wouldn't 
have suggested a solution that has not worked for me. You might try adding a "" 
or "None" option at the beginning of your options, and set that as default, to 
see if that gives you the desired behavior. It should take you les than 5 
minutes to modify the ChoiceFields code as I've suggested, recompile and run 
it, to see if it does what you want, when modified.

P.S. It's not at all surprising that you require a large amount of code for 
your 5-page form. I have a 4-page form that requires about 3,000 lines of code.
