The quick answer is you can't do that with one large BufferedImage because, as it name suggests, it's buffered (in memory). It might be that you could use some kind of RenderedImage though.

I suggest you search the JAI/ImageIO mailing list archives, or ask the list. They probably have some ideas how you can do just that.
