Hi Stu,
To place the favorites on your start menu:
1. from control panel, choose task bar and start menu.
2. When the dialogue opens, tab to the start menu tab,make sure the start 
menu is set to classic view, and then tab to the customize button, and hit 
the spacebar.
3. Tab until you come to start menu settings tree-view, and down arrow once.
4. This should be show favorites, so hit the spacebar to set it to on,and 
then okay your way out of the dialogue.
You are done.
