I confirm that reverting back to the following packages fixes the
problem:

kdenlive_0.5.svn20071228-0.0_i386.deb
libmlt++0.2.5_0.2.2.svn20071228-0.1_i386.deb
libmlt0.2.5_0.2.4.svn20071228-0.2_i386.deb
libmlt-data_0.2.4.svn20071228-0.2_all.deb

(These packages are found on debian-multimedia.org)

I'm doing the rendering using inigo, so I suspect that the problem is
not inside kdenlive, but rather in libmlt. This is however just a
supposition, as I have absolutely zero knowledge of kdenlive and mlt
internals and relationship.
