Grand meeting held to mark Party¹s 71st Anniversary

A grand meeting to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the founding of the
Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) was held in Hanoi yesterday. Among those
attending the meeting were Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu; Party
Central Committee advisors Do Muoi, Le Duc Anh and Vo Van Kiet; President
Tran Duc Luong; National Assembly Chairman Nong Duc Manh; Politburo
permanent member and President of the Fatherland Front Central Committee,
Pham The Duyet and Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem. Addressing the
meeting, Politburo member and secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, Nguyen
Phu Trong highlighted the significance of the founding of the CPV. He
affirmed that the founding of the CPV is a great and outstanding event of
the 20th century, marking a new turning point and a new period of
development of the nation. Over the past 71 years, despite many ups and
downs, the Communist Party has overcome many difficulties and challenges and
step-by-step marched forward. The Vietnamese people, under the leadership of
the Party, have gained many victories and great achievements in the 20th
century. He also emphasised that today¹s generation should be responsible
for preserving and promoting the glorious tradition created by the Party
over the past 71 years. At present, the Party and the whole people are
carrying out the process of doi moi (renovation) with a focal task of
implementation of industrialisation and modernisation, step-by-step building
material and spiritual conditions for socialism. Mr Trong also said that the
Party should further strengthen the Party building and consolidating work
particularly in the current domestic and international context. This would
help make the Party purer and stronger so that it can be able to lead the
country to unceasingly develop. Also during the meeting, representative of
the capital's people of all social strata expressed their pride in the Party
and pledged to pool their efforts to learn and work in order to contribute
to building a more prosperous and stronger country.

Party¹s founding anniversary celebrated nationwide The 71st anniversary of
the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) is being celebrated
across the nation. An exhibition named ŒCommunist Party of Vietnam - Faith
and Mind¹ was opened on February 2 at the Young People¹s Cultural House in
Ho Chi Minh City. Through 200 coloured and black and white photographs,
about 20 panel posters and tables of figure displayed, the exhibition
features the historical role of the CPV in the struggle for national
liberation and the national renovation and development process. The same
day, talks on Party tradition and exchange between veteran Party members and
young people were held in the city. The city¹s cinematography company
organised a ŒVietnamese Film Week¹ at all cinemas in the city. Public
meetings were also held in provinces of Tuyen Quang, Ca Mau, Thua Thien-Hue,
Quang Nam, Hoa Binh, Dong Nai and Tay Ninh and Military Zone 1 to mark the
CPV¹s 71st founding anniversary.

Congratulations to the Party on 71st anniversary Fourteen delegations
representing for agencies, mass organisations, armed forces and people of
all strata congratulated the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee on
the occasion of the 71st founding anniversary of the Party in an atmosphere
of welcoming the country, the Party and spring at the Party's Headquarters
on February 2. General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central
Committee (CPV CC) Le Kha Phieu; Politburo member and President Tran Duc
Luong; Politburo member and chairman of the National Assembly, Nong Duc
Manh; Member of the Standing Board of the CPV CC Politburo and President of
the Vietnam Fatherland Front Pham The Duyet; Politburo member and director
of the Party's Personnel Commission Nguyen Van An and Politburo member and
director of the Party's Commission for Inspection Nguyen Thi Xuan My and
others received the delegations. All the guests expressed their deep
gratitude to the Party, belief in the renovation process of the Party and
affirmed the achievements of Vietnam's revolution, especially those in the
past 15 years of renovation which is closely linked to the contributions of
the Party. They said the growth of the political, social and mass
organisations is attributed to the leadership and concern of the Party. The
delegates promised to enhance the spirit of solidarity to successfully their
political tasks, recordidng achievements to welcome the coming Ninth Party
National Congress. General Secretary Le Kha Phieu and other Politburo
members sincerely thanked the agencies, organisations and people of all
strata nationwide for their concerns and good sentiments to the Party. These
delegations include the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, the
National Assembly, the government, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of
Public Security, the Vietnam Labour Federation, the Vietnam Women's Union,
the Youth Union Central Committee, the Vietnam Veterans' Association, the
Vietnam Farmers' Association, the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology
Associations, the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations, Hanoi
city and Nhan Dan (the People) newspaper.

Party leader meets ex-Con Dao prisoners General Secretary of the Communist
Party of Vietnam Central Committee Le Kha Phieu met a delegation of former
Con Dao prisoners. They came to congratulate the Party on the occasion of
the 71st founding anniversary on February 2. Mr Doan Duy Thanh, former
member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and vice chairman
of Ministers' Council, head of the Hanoi's liaison group , on behalf of
others, expressed their deep gratitude to the Party and affirmed great
contributions of the Party. They said they wished that the Party would be
consolidated with every passing day to lead the entire people to implement
the set political tasks. General Secretary Le Kha Phieu thanked the
delegates for their congratulations. He also informed the delegation about
some contents and results of Party's congresses at all levels and of the
Party building and consolidating work. He said he wished that the
ex-prisoners would bring into play the traditional nature of the communists,
actively taking part in building the Party and deserving the trust of the
generations. BACK TO TOP PM visits Di An Carriage Factory Prime Minister
Phan Van Khai paid a visit to the Di An Carriage Factory in the southern
province of Binh Duong on February 2. The prime minister praised the efforts
made by staff of the factory to develop the glorious tradition of the Di An
Train Factory, one of the places where there was the staunchest
revolutionary struggle since the early establishment of the Communist Party
of Vietnam. He spoke highly of the excellent achievements of the factory,
together with the railway sector better meeting the requirements of
development in the renovation process and the demand of the people. The
factory has now been able to manufacture high quality carriages such as
those for the S1/2 trains, second generation, which are spoken highly of by
the passengers. Earlier, Prime Minister Khai paid floral tribute to the
first Communists at the Memorial to commemorate the Di An Train Workers'
Movement in January 1930.

Anniversary of Paris Agreement marked Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh has
described the signing of the Paris Agreement in 1973 as an event that set a
fully active stage for Vietnam's diplomacy, thus leading the Vietnamese
revolution from one victory to another. The Vice President was talking with
about 50 officials who took part in the peace talks that led to the signing
of the historic Paris Agreement in 1973. The get-together was held in Hanoi
on February 2 to mark the 28th anniversary of the accords (January 27). Vice
President Binh, who was then Foreign Minister of the Provisional
Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam and led its delegation to the
Paris Conference, attributed the victory to the clear-sighted leadership of
the Communist Party of Vietnam and the great contribution and help from
friends in the world. Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien said the signing of
the Paris Agreement served as a major lesson for diplomats both now and in
the future as it was the result of Ho Chi Minh revolutionary diplomacy.

Vietnam calls for lifting of sanctions against Libya It is time to lift
sanctions against Libya and help the ordinary people of the country return
to a normal life, said the Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman. Mr Phan Thuy
Thanh told the Vietnam News Agency on January 31 that Libya had proved its
good-will and co-operation by helping to solve the case of the destruction
of a US airliner over Lockerbie, Scotland. She said: "With the judgement by
a Scotish court of two Libyan defendants accused of involvement in the
bombing, Vietnam holds that it's now time to lift sanctions against Libya to
create conditions for the Libyan people to bring their life back to normal."

VWU helps victims of Indian quake The Vietnam Women's Union, VWU, has given
US $3,000 as relief aid to women and children victims of the devastating
earthquake in India's Gujarat state. VWU Chairman Ha Thi Khiet gave the
money to India's Ambassador to Vietnam, Saurabh Kumar, in Hanoi on February
2. She expressed sympathy with the people, especially the women and children
of the western state in their heavy losses. In a message of condolence,
Chairwoman Khiet said that it was hoped that with the Indian government's
effort and help from the international community, the people, including the
women and children of Gujarat, would soon overcome the heavy consequencies
of the quake and resume normal life. (VNA)
