It wasn't at all unusual for students of artists to copy their master's
work.  This was one way to perfect techniques.  That's why you see so many
paintings attributed to "in the style of..."  or "after...", and sometimes
the actual artist's name is not known.  

Today's art students still absorb the essence of good teachers and often
imitate their style, but it is probably considered considered plagarism if
a student duplicates a teacher's work.
