Sorry, Lenore, not to answer your question sooner. I have been away for the last 3 days, and I only get the digest, - and have only just reached the question.
I always lay my trace thread (cordonet) in one colour for the whole piece, and I usually work out beforehand how I can lay the whole design with one continuous double thread. I don't like separate threads for sections, as they give a thicker bit where they overlap at the finish, and I think that a continuous trace is stringer in the long run., Everywhere is linked one thread between the other two, wherever the lines touch or cross. Plan, on a copy of the pattern, which stitches you want to do in which section, and also mark the direction of the stitches - dot in the first row or 2, as the "grain line" gives a different look to a piece. (If you have the IOLI Bulletin, look at the photo of a leaf in Devon's article.) When you start the Cordonette, work the "back" section first, and work towards the "front". By that I mean work the furthest leg first, as the body will be in front of that leg, etc. The beak may be in front of the head, so work the cordonette around the head, before working the beak. Have a look at the Guild of Needlelaces site, and the Ducks challenge, and find my Duck, and I think you will see what I mean. His head and neck feathers section is in front of the next body section, so the body was worked first, and the head and neck second, so the knots of the buttonhole stitches lays over the previous section, and it looks "in front". This will give your work a more 3D look. As you say - there is a lot of thinking to be done with needlelace - but isn't it worthwhile when you see the finished piece?!!
