GEDCOM was developed early on in the process of making genealogical databases user-friendly. It was adopted as a universal file. You have not been able to read it with any sense if you opened it as a text file. Download PAF from the Familysearch.com (it's free), then import GEDCOM to that program. Everything will fall into place! The advantage is that you can share your information with relatives regardless of the genealogy program they use. Don't confuse a genealogy program with any other database (either Excel or Access). Each has a job which it does superbly. Indexing a book is not one of them for any purpose-made genealogy program.
