lftp help

Trying to change the password from a script and keep getting invalid format.

sample:

lftp  ( enter ... works)
open XXXXXX  ( enter...works)

user ME123 /oldpass/newpass/newpass

 530 new password format invalid



I've tried SEVERAL formats without any luck.   I need to change the password 
via script.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
