>From the blog of The Providence Journal: Sen. (Sheldon) Whitehouse made news during a Senate speech in late December when he slammed opponents of health-care legislation as being supported by fanatics and "right-wing militia" and Aryan support groups. He likened health-care opponents to an "aggrieved minority" -- one whose "malignant and vindictive passions" have created a toxic atmosphere in the Senate and could lead the country down a road to atrocities like those perpetrated by Nazis and Southern racists.
Whitehouse's statements illustrate the problem with the entire debate in this
country. The playing field puts libertarians, conservatives and Republicans,
what is called roughly the Right, at a disadvantage. People like him and
Pelosi, The New York Times, Ed Schultz, Obama, Bill Press, etc. can call us
names like this, yet if we respond in kind with 'communist' or even the less
pejorative 'socialist', it is called McCarthyism. Yet the philosophic
similarities between the mainstream Democrats and liberals on the one hand and
the socialist/communists on the other, is far greater than any between us and
Nazis, Aryan Nationers, etc.
Having lived most of my life in Rhode Island, I can vouch that Whitehouse is
living proof that in that state, Mickey Mouse could be elected if he ran as a
Democrat.
