Hi Shlomi and all.

I believe that we should not discuss archives at all, and if we do, then
the minimum (mainly how to open an archive, and probably to test it, but
not to create one). Don't forget that we assume that most of them don't
necessarily arrive with the needed background, and we will need to cover
many sub-subjects in about a hour or 2 (if I am not mistaken?).
We should talk about the similarties to Windows, and then
immidiately to switch to the thing that is called "shell" - what it means,
what it does (shortly, very shortly), and to start explaining about the
most common commands, so they will know what to do with it (finger, ls, w,
man, and so on), and how to use the regular options, if needed (such as ls
-la etc.).
In general (and in my opinion), we should cover X features shortly, as I
assume that it will not be the problem, and to talk mainly about the
console, the regular commands and the main features (using tab, watching
previous commands etc.). If they are really interested, we can forward
them to either man, links (and not to STFW them :), or the admin lecture.
Btw, with the package that I got as a new student (sounds weird, yes,
but I start studying officially :), I got a very nice booklet from TCC
concerning "common UNIX commands" and "how to use your t2". I believe that
part of it can be very useful for us (they also have a very nice list of
the common used commands and more). I can bring it with me on Monday, but
I will be very late (intro to CS exam, from 5:00pm till 8:00pm).

Creating backup is not a subject for beginners (basic use) in my opinion.
Moreover, you might get them scared if you start talking about backups :)
Not to mention that they won't be able to study all the syntax. If it is
only for demonstration (to show some abilities etc.) then it might be a
good idea. The backup subject, btw (including the demonstration), should
go to the admin lecture, as it is a very important subject there.
Whatsoever, we should give that demonstration in the end of the lecture,
only if we have time left, as we will most likely have many things to
cover.
Best regards.
