an important subject is not covered - editor(s). it was agreed that we
will show them basic 'vi' usage. we should also show them one graphical
editor, since that's the editor they will ordinarily use. if it was gnome,
i'd show gedit - since its kde - there should be some kde editor to show.
right? by 'show' i mean only show that it can do the basics (i.e. open a
file, edit something, save, save as and close. for the rest - they'll ee
the menus for themselves).

with vi, i would show how to:

1. open it.
2. explain command mode vs. edit mode.
3. show commands 'a' and 'i'.
4. show commands 'x' and 'X'.
5. show moving with arrow keys.
6. show how to save the file (':w') and hwo to save as (':w fname')
7. show how to quit, including quitting without changing the file
   (':q' and ':q!').
8. show search ('/' and '?').
9. tell, without showing, that vi has very interesting movement commands.
10. show ':help'.

that's it. no time to show more then this. don't beleive me? we'll have a
rehersal of the overall lecture - you'll see. if i'm wrong, we can add
'yy' and 'p/P'.

regarding tar files, i agree with adir - show only how to look at them and
open them. don't show how to create them. people will need to open them in
order to install software (for example).

regarding your backup command - its pointless, since one can simply do 'cp
-rp' for that, and the small delicacy of your backup method is pointless
for people who haven't donesimilar operations in the past.
if you want to show something fancy - show them the 'find' command, with a
zillion flags ;) (e.g. show them how you can erase all files with '.bak'
in their names, in a diretory tree, in a single command. that's something
you can't normaly do under windows, right?)
