You can use pdf[e]latex instead of [e]latex. pdftex can generally handle
not only PDF images, but also some other formats such as jpeg and png
(IIRC).

Discalimer: I have not worked with pdftex much.  Working with pdftex is
not exactly like working with standard latex (->dvi->postscript), because
many pcakges use postscript somewhere.
