Vi will execute 'modelines' in the first or last 5 lines of a file if they
start with vi: or ex:. These days you can only set options there. In
the early days you could put any commands including shell escapes
in the modelines and have them auto-execute. It was about 20 years
ago when everyone realized that was a bad idea, but there are always
people (and companies) who refuse to learn from history...

1) That was Morris's, not Mitnick
2) it was a buffer-over run attack -- all such code was removed from
Unix within a couple of months .. ie. 1988
3) 12 years later, Microsoft products are still open to buffer
   overrun attacks.
What kind of stupid shits are programming for Microsoft?

Actually, it was VERY dangerous. It took down nearly every machine
on the Internet at that time.

However...that was 12 years ago, and we haven't seen another
serious Unix attack since then--despite the now widespread availability
of Unix/Linux systems for would-be virus writers to use as a
development platform.

You can always power it down. Hold the power button in for 6 seconds, and
it will power off. That's hardware configured and nothing the OS can do
will stop that.

Ok. Now...try to take the same safety precautions with an Excel file,

Hint fucking hint: you can't.

if you start any line in the top four lines with a colon (":") vi
will interpret the line as an ex command. However, unlike word
macros, you can avoid such things by first using top (1) on the file.

VAX and SUN. Used a buffer overrun attack.

Code that allowed buffer overruns was all cleaned up out of Unix within
a couple weeks.

Meanwhile, here in the year 2000, Microsoft is selling OS's that
are STILL vulnerable to this kind of attack.

Why is that?

Yes, yes...against improperly managed systems.

Conversely, it is IMPOSSIBLE to make NT secure AND still have it

That's because you're a gullible MORON.

Wrong.

I missed that one.

I suspect you are confusing two incidents. One, several months ago, where Red Hat
was shipping a component that came with the ever-popular default password; the
other, maybe two years ago, where someone uploaded a hacked version of some OSS
product to a popular download site.

BTW, the latter case was caught within *hours*, simply because it was open source,
and people do actually read the code. And the site owners used their FTP logs to
notify people who had downloaded it during that period.

Please search it for us, and post it here. I'm an avid Slashdot reader, and yet
somehow I missed it. I suspect you have the stories confused per above, but I'm
always willing to learn.
