Hi,

I just installed Mandrake 7.0 on my dual Pentium Pro machine, using the
Kodak 4804 IDE CD RW, but after installing the CDRW won't work properly
ie won't even mount. I read the tutorial regarding CD Burners on the
Mandrake web site, to no avail, still no good. Anybody got an idea on
how to get my CDRW to work??

Any help appreciated,

Roberto.

There are two ways of having 1.2M drives work at the 360K density, but
most newer drives do not include the options for one. The original way
was to actually change the spindle speed; 360 rpm for 1.2MB HD, 300 rpm
for 360/720K densities. That way, the data rates could be held at the
500 kbps for 'HD' and 250 kbps for 'MFM' (or Double-Density). This
complicated bios routines because switching speeds required insertion of
considerable delays normally associated with spinup times. Another
complication introduced with the 3.5" HD format was that the polarity of
the "HD" lead was the opposite between the two. This is well documented
in older National Semiconductor (among other) data sheets. This is NOT
how most clone PCs work.

Most of them now keep the spindle speed at 360 rpm and change the data
rate from 500 kbps for 1.2M HD to 300 kbps for 360/720K densities. If
you work out the math, 300 kbps at 360 rpm is the same bit density as
250 kbps at 300 rpm, so the disks were compatible in this regard. Now a
density change no longer need accomodate the physical delays in changing
motor speed.

I believe that you may be confused by thinking that the 360K diskettes
are writted in a 1.2M drive by writing two adjacent tracks with the same
data...they are NOT. In a 1.2M drive, the drive steps twice for each
track increment, writing every other track. If it were not so, your
times for Linux would be more than twice those for DOS. If you sketch a
couple of tracks on a piece of paper, label one on an end as track 0,
and increment numbers for the adjacent 'tracks'. Mark a large swath
around track 0, 2, 4, etc. That would correspond to tracks 0, 1 and 2
on 360K. The narrower tracks will be reliable, but writing narrow and
reading wide (with a 'real' 360k drive) might not if the disk were
previously written with a 'real' 360k.

If you can find some old 720K drives by TEAC, you will find a jumper
that actually forces a double-step the drive. It appears that they used
a common stepper and electronics between 40 and 80 track drives (at
least the ones I had in the mid 80s), and the technology was carried
forward. You can find assembly code for Z80/8080 systems which do the
double-stepping in CP/M archives as part of BIOS code for CP/M.

How do you know that it doesn't mount?

Mandrake comes with supermount, so you don't have to mount it manually,
just cd to the cd directory (I can't remember what this is, look in
/etc/fstab).

Is it recognized at boot time as a cdrom?

Is harddisk optimization enabled for the cdrom drive - it shouldn't,
but the script that does this is not fool proof, it enabled optimization
for my DVD drive, and that didn't work.

Can't help much here. Only ever used old versions as Compaq branded cards
so no experience

> 2. Is my understanding of RAID 5 correct?

Yep. If you want to add another drive, you generally have to destroy and
rebuild your RAID set (to properly distribute parity), therefore needing to
backup and restore data from the OS too.

> 3. If I get a two channel card, can I implement 2x37 on each channel for

Yep. This should give you better performance - add the drives as Ch1D1,
Ch2D1, Ch1D2, Ch2D2 for best results (assuming you can specify - I have come
across some low end controllers that leave the interleaving details a
mystery...). This won't give you any more redundancy as you can still only
lose one drive from a RAID 5 and keep your data live.

I don't use supermount, and after installing Linux (from the CDRW) I
tried to mount it but it would just come up with an error message
saying: Could not mount. mount /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device.

Any other ideas??

What does /dev/cdrom point to?

Again: Is the cdrom recognized at boot time?

/dev/cdrom points to /dev/scd0, and no, when it tries to load driver for
hda (!?!?!?) it can't find any so it's not recognised.

Hi,

I bought a Dynalink pcmcia modem card and it came with a
Linux driver realtek_cb. The instruction manual gave
some hints on how to get thing going such as editing the
config and config.opts files. The precompiled module didn't
load, but I compiled the module fresh from the C-source and
now it loads BUT: I get "resource temporary not available"
errors. When looking closer to what is done, I saw that
the assigned IRQ is 255 or 0 depending on insert time of the
card.

Does anyone know how to fix this or had similar problems WITH
solutions please

Greetz,

I have my Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT with an active matrix LCD for
sale. The CPU is a Pentium running at 120mhz, it has the CD-ROM
attachment and the Floppy Disk attachment. The condition is fair because
of a small crack near one of the hinges (I think this a common problem)
and there are a couple of stickers on the case (a CRYSTAL METHOD and a
SWITCH BLADE SYMPHONY). I still have the original manuals as I'm the
original owner. Also included is a PC-Card FaxModem rated at 56k Flex.
I will not erase the HD which has MS OFFICE 97 PRO, running MS Windows
98, MS MONEY 99 and more! You will be responsible to delete those Apps.
I will include a very nice laptop bag which the Satellite Pro fits very
well in and an external mouse (when you don't want to use the trackpoint)
NEW PRICE $480 (need the cash for taxes). Also as a recent addition I
will include my Zip Drive as well because I realized that I won't need it
after the sale. Also after going to Toshiba's web site to update the
drivers I notice a settlement from the FDC that entitles Toshiba laptops

OK - have done the kernel re-compile etc no probs, even downloaded a new
sound driver for the live from the nice folks at creative - but am having a
LOT of hassle with the DVD dvd playback.

The process of creating the keys for each individual segment of the DVD
before playback is sooo annoying!! It took me ages to realise (from the
README and not the summary instructions) that you have to create tons of
these files before playing the DVD. Can this be automated more easily in
some way?

Also playback is a bit patchy on my machine (fine in Win, much worse
playback in Lin with a KDE d/t etc.).

Cheers

The OKIPAGE 10e is a PCL5e printer (no PostScript) and is compatible

Hello Gabbriel,

The 8p printer is the only one that supports PCL5e, it should be OK.
You can use any HP LaserJet 5 compatible PCL5e driver with it.
Otherwise, there are no official drivers that I know of for the 6w or
8w, and the 4w one is only likely to work partially with them.

Hope this helps,
