We have removed Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 (potato) and the companion CD from our products, and have added Debian GNU/Linux 3.0r0 (woody; i386; non-US) to our product offering, in a 7-CD (24 CHF) or 4-CD (14 CHF) set (shipping and handling fee is still 4 CHF as before). Please note that you can still order, if required, Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 with the KDE companion CD, for i386, SPARC, Alpha, PPC, m68k or source. Please contact us by e-mail if you need one of those products [2]. Debian GNU/Linux 3.0r0 (woody; i386; non-US) is _immediately_ available. Past customers can order and their order will be delivered without pre-payment. Customers having bought a product from debian.ch recently have a 10 CHF reduction on the 7-CD set version, offer valid until 31st of July 2002. Recently means: you have received a Bon/Gutschein within your order. Please drop us a mail to [2] just after you order so we can correct the amount (give your customer number!). For now, we will only ship i386: customers wanting another architecture, or source, should drop us a note [3]. We have not printed manuals yet, if you find this useful, please drop us a note [3]. We have written a documentation for the upgrade -- still not that well tested sorry -- here: [4]. This document will be printed with each order as usual. Finally, we have set up an update architecture. If you add deb http://updates.debian.ch/debian.ch/ woody updates deb http://security.debian.ch/debian.ch/ woody security to your /etc/apt/sources.list (and run apt-get update && apt-get -u dist-upgrade), you may install, in the future, debian.ch-specific Debian woody packages and security upgrades. At this time this is just a place-holder/is empty, though, and is absolutely _no replacement_ for a Debian mirror or security.debian.org. We intend to offer a full Debian mirror in the future though, when our uplink will be upgraded. Customers not wanting to order from us (e.g. because they have a fast enough Internet link and prefer to spare on plastic spindles), can upgrade using information in the section 4.2.7 of [4], possibly using near mirrors such as sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch. Note that you are not forced to upgrade immediately, since potato's (2.2) security will still be maintained (see http://security.debian.org/). It is however foreseeable that in the next few months, potato support will be discontinued. An upgrade should thus be planned. Additional security information We also want to give (again) some security information, since it is very important that Debian users cooperate in making the Internet a safer place. Debian comes with an easy-to-use update functionality which can be used to get updated packages from the Internet and install them in most of the cases without any administrative overhead. You should add the following to your ``/etc/apt/sources.list'' if this is not already the case. The minimal addition is the security entry. The ``apt-setup'' tool can help you to select the nearest mirror. Note that you should in any case review the generated ``/etc/apt/sources.list''. # Swiss mirror for Debian deb http://sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/ftp/mirror/debian/ woody main non-free contrib # Security deb http://security.debian.org/ woody/updates main contrib non-free # non-US deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US woody/non-US main contrib non-free (note that the abovr also enables the installation of non-free packages, a decision which is yours to ponder and possibly make.) and then run, regularly, apt-get update && apt-get -u dist-upgrade If you see that the to be downloaded files are too many, interrupt with CTRL-C, de-install some packages you don't need, and redo the update. An alternative is to order an upgrade CD, especially if your Internet link is not fast enough or too costly. Packages that you install manually (not from an official CD or from official mirrors) should be taken care of specially. We recommend putting woody instead of stable in the configuration file in order to not upgrade to a new major release without wanting it.
