Dave & Marek,

tcpdump revealed that SquirrelMail is NOT initiating a TLS connection, 
even though I am using PHP 4.3.3.

I guess its time to take this to the SquirrelMail mailing list.

Use tcpdump to verify that SquirrelMail really speaks ssl. This error
usually shows up when you connect to an ssl-enabled server with a
non-ssl client.
It does, but according to the features page[0], PHP 4.3.x+ is required,
otherwise you have to use stunnel.
