Well, that is what we will try. But there is a slight doubt that it won't be possible to insert work item history and source control history into the database using only API. That is why I'm looking in the direction of direct database access.

Maybe the first version will be to just transfer latest versions from one server to another using the object model. And then the next one would be regarding the history...

By the way - how do you think, would it be possible to later sell such a program (in case we will be successful)? I'm asking because my company currently [or rather the higher bosses] does not openly support and finance research projects (giving priority to normal money-earning projects) and to show that it could at least earn as much as those expenses, the politics regarding research and new technologies could change...

Hi Karlis,

My advice (and the advice of Microsoft) would be not to touch the TFS databases – but use the object model.

I’ve never seen a TFS database description, and I doubt that we ever will.

Hello

I can't describe how hopeful I was when I saw this topic... I really hoped for an easy answer. But seems that we will have to do it ourselves :)

My problem is a bit harder, when no database copying comes handy...

1. We currently have two seperate TFS servers, each used in everydays work.

2. We have purchased another server which we will use as our TFS.

3. We want to transfer projects from those two old servers to the new one. (only work items and source control)

Currently I think we will have to dig into the TFS database and try copying the data from server to server. The problem with foreign keys should be maintainable (even maintaining links from changesets to work items), we already did something similar only on smaller scale. Actualy the task is not impossible, and if nothing else is available, then maybe we could even earn something from it ;) The question is - is there somewhere some sort of TFS database structure description - it would be nice, if we could skip the trying-to-understand phase...

Hey Scott,

I think the migration would apply even if your current TFS isn't working.  The reason i migrated was due the TFS not working (team member stuffed up IIS settings).  I don't think there are too many configuration or user specific settings kept in the TFS databases apart from things like user names contained within work items and version control.  So the article

on Moving Team Foundation Server ( http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms404879.aspx ) didn't work?

I guess the next best thing is exporting all you work items into excel and copying your versioned files locally and importing them back into the new TFS server.  Obviously this would mean you would lose all your history with regards to the version controlled items.

Hey Marty,

Yeah, I've already done a similar thing. Problem is what if you have a problem with your current TFS and want to migrate all projects out of the current TFS and into a new clean and working TFS.

Thanks for the thought though.

Hello Scott,

Early this year I transferred a whole TFS instance from one server to another.  This involved backing up the TFS databases, reinstalling TFS on the new machine(configuring the settings again) and restoring the databases. As you probably know there are around 11 databases from Reportng to Work-Item Tracking.  The thing to note here is the databases are not project specific, so it is impossible to discriminate one project from another within a single instance of TFS by looking at the database.

What I would suggest is porting the TFS instance to the new server and then manually deleting the projects that you don't want.

NOTE: When I did do the migration to the new server, I gave the new server the same computer name as the old server, also the migration was of a workgroup configuration of TFS.  By having the same computer name it was a back up and restore job.

I used the following article to complete the back up http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms253070.aspx and the following article to complete the restore http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms252516.aspx

Scott, with the project that you are trying to transfer is it in a domain or part of a work group? Are you transferring the project to another domain?

Have a look at the section on msdn called Moving Team Foundation Server http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms404879.aspx

I think you should find your answer there.

Nothing that is built in. I've contemplated building a tool to do this a couple of times but it is a fairly significant development effort. It'd love to have a tool to do it!!!

I've asked this question a couple of times early this year but thought it might be worth asking again now – does anyone have a mechanism of copying a team project from one server to another? Out of the box a project is tied indefinitely to the TFS instance.
