The string representation is a curious feature of 
the work, since so many of the details are meticulously recorded.
However, it is unikely that they are single and 
one end and double at the other :)
There look to be thin traces of the pair in one 
of the right hand details, but not the other.
An intriguing but unlikely possibility is that 
the right hand spacing is extremely narrow. I 
have never tried it that way, but it should work.

It looks like the painter didn't care to show double strings, or the player
used single strings omitting every second peg.
