My advice to new Linux folks is always to start with a 'mainstream'
distribution. I.e., start with Ubuntu. It is very much designed for
people who aren't Linux geeks. It works out of the box, it's easy to
customize, and every question anyone has ever had about it is answered
somewhere, simply because there are so many people using it. Once you
have some experience, then it makes sense to branch out to a less
well-known distro.

Paul's advice is all on the mark, but I'm guessing you don't want those
complexities. So use Ubuntu.

PS If you like KDE, then install Kubuntu. If you have some other old,
underpowered machine, then install Xubuntu on it. You'll be amazed how
fast a 10-year old laptop can be.
