Thank you very much. To resolve the problem I migrated from tetex to texlive, then I manually installed the needed classes; rehashed the TeX database; reconfigured LyX and got it working! I still can't figure out what changed when I switched to the new version of LyX, as *nothing* else (to my understanding) had changed. Mystery.
