During February, March and April the campaign will > be on also to make sure that General Wiranto and the other murderous > generals will be brought to trial for their atrocities in Aceh, West Papua, > Lampung, Nipa, all through Indonesia in 1965-6 and in East Timor. > > Avelino da Silva, General Secretary, Socialist Party of Timor (PST) > > Avelino da Silva played a vital role in preparing the military work of the > Timorese underground in Java. When his work was uncovered, he sought > sanctuary in the Austrian Embassy in Jakarta with his wife and children and > other comrades. He was the only Timorese who sought sanctuary in a Jakarta > Embassy whom the Indonesian military would not permit leave the country. He > spent 18 months in the Embassy sanctuary, all the time continuing the work > of building the Socialist Party of Timor in Java and Timor through a secret > mobile phone and courier system. After Suharto fell, he was able to leave > the Embassy and work openly again. He traveled back and forth between > Jakarta and Dili in the lead up to the August 30 referendum. When other > leaders and activists fled Dili when the holocaust began he and the PST > leadership joined the refugees in the mountains around Dili to help > organise them. Now the PST is at the forefront of organising East Timor's > workers and peasants to be able to campaign for their rights. The PST > organised the first demonstration under the UNATET administration of > workers demanding an official minimum wage.
