Thanks for that singularly helpful post, Roberto!

If only the Vatican had allowed talk from their bishops like this fifteen
years ago, eh? Anyway, Valentini and the CNBB seem THE critical mass right
now - no doubt about it. [snip]

Well, Rob: in reality the VATICAN DOES NOT ALLOW "talk from their
bishops like this" today as well as "fifteen
years ago". There has been for about 40 years an increasing harsh inner
fighting between the conservative and progressive factions of the Roman
Catholic Church in Brazil and, since the inauguration of Pope John Paul II,
between the Brazilian Roman Catholicism and the Papacy . Conservatives
argue that even the sermons in the worship services have become radical
leftist speeches, what is true.

Progressive Catholic militants often complain of the Vatican interference,
even in blasphemous tones, and sometimes I wonder why there is not a new
schism. There are two precedents:

        a) Around 165 years ago: during the Brazilian monarchy the Catholic
Church was united to the State. Notwithstanding this, the regent during
the minority of the future emperor dom Pedro II, priest Antonio Diogo
Feijó, who also was a progressive for those remote times, menaced to
sever the allegiance of the Brazilian Catholicism to Rome for regarding
the Papacy too much reactionary and interventionist. The Holy Inquisition
headquarters had been destroyed by the liberal mobs only 15 years before.

        b) In 1950 a little branch of caholics constituted the Brazilian Catholic
Church (not "Roman" anymore). The chief reason was the mandatory celibacy
of priests, that is opposed by these faithful. They are today a negligible
and reactionary sect and many Roman Catholic priests are nowadays married
in secret...

Nhil novum sub Solem... ;-))
