A very useful article, thanks.
As I've pointed out ad nauseam, the computing power needed to track
fluctuations in currencies and futures is almost entirely wasted from a
social point of view.
By contrast, the computing power needed to handle the algorithms of a
Leontief input-output table for managing the economy in a democratic
socialist fashion would fit on the cheapest PC.
By the way, the nomination fight over Betsy Devos exposes another huge
waste of computing power: in education, as in health care, government
agencies are imposing irrational quantitative "quality measures" which
require teaching or practicing to the test. Meanwhile the more socially
relevant calculations - i.e. student/teacher or patient/provider ratios -
could almost be done by counting fingers and toes.
