Dear list,

I thought Mascagni fans would be interested to hear about the
following news:

First, a concert version of Iris will be performed at the
Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on January 18, 2003. Jean-Yves Ossonce will
conduct the Radio Symfonie Orkest and the Groot Omroepkoor. Solists
will be Nelly Miricioiu, soprano, Nicola Rossi Giordano, tenor, Paolo
Gavanelli, baryton, and Nicolai Ghiaurov, bass.

Second, a new CD, "Pietro Mascagni - Symphonic and choral works" is
available on label Dynamic, from a concert recorded in Trieste on
October 6, 1995. Track list is as follows:

    1. Cavalleria Rusticana (Preludio)
    2. Cavalleria Rusticana (Intermezzo)
    3. L'Amico Fritz (Inermezzo)
    4. Isabeau (Intermezzo)
    5. Silvano (Barcarola)
    6. Le Maschere (Sinfonia)
    7. Danza esotica
    8. Guglielmo Ratcliff (Sogno)
    9. Le Maschere (Inno a Rosaura)
   10. Le Maschere (Furlana)
   11. Iris (Preludio - Inno del sole)

Tiziano Severini conducts the Orchestra and Coro del Teatro Lirico
Giuseppe Verdi di Trieste. Ine Meisters is in charge of the chorus. I
don't think the performance is stellar, but it's a good CD to have for
those unfamiliar with the complete operas, and the Danza esotica is a
welcome bonus. The CD can be ordered directly from Dynamic's web site
at:

   http://www.dynamic.it/

Third, I just found out that a new Mascagni biography in English will
be released soon. This book by Allan Mallach, "Pietro Mascagni and His
Operas", will be available in June. More information at Amazon.com:

I haven't seen the book yet but look forward to it!

-Erik
