Dear list, I just added an article published in the Cosmopolitan in 1897: http://www.mascagni.org/articles/cosmopolitan-1897 The author supposedly spent "nearly all of August [1897] with the composer and his wife". I think that one could have expected a more insightful article after such an experience. Besides flattering comments about Mascagni, his family and many aspects of his life, the article concentrates on "his new opera", "Iris". I don't know if as of August 1897 the libretto was still in flux, which may explain the imprecisions in the synopsis of the opera, or if, and this is more likely, the author was simply missing information. It took more than a year to bring the opera to completion after the author's stay in Pesaro, its premiere taking place on November 22, 1898. The author's prediction that "Iris" would be a great success was mostly verified: "Iris" was an ambitious work that Mascagni took very seriously and, with "L'amico Fritz", is the most performed Mascagni opera after "Cavalleria Rusticana" to this day.
