Dear list, As a follow-up to the previous posting about Mascagni's 1902-1903 American tour, here is a fantastic colored engraving published in the Corriere Illustrato of November 23, 1902: http://www.mascagni.org/framed-images/504300 The engraving shows Mascagni arrested by the sheriff of Boston in his hotel suite. The resemblance is quite good. The picture (about 24x30 cm) occupies the entire back page of the paper. The colors have barely faded after a century. A short article inside mentions the incident, with the opinion that it is a scandal that a citizen from a friendly nation can be arrested on simple presumptions (that Mascagni owes his American manager money and is not willing to pay). Mascagni paid a bail and was freed almost immediately. Prior articles probably already discussed Mascagni's troubles in America. Still on an American note, a recent photo album shows David Stivender conducting the Hymn of the Sun from Iris: http://www.mascagni.org/pictures/stivender The entire Hymn of the Sun is available on the VHS and DVD of the Metropolitan Opera Centennial Gala in 1983: http://www.mascagni.org/recordings/503283 It is a great video that I recommend.
