1. A review of Alan Mallach's "Pietro Mascagni and his Operas", by Roger Flury:
2. "Die Rantzau", Oper von Pietro Mascagni, an article published in 1893 in the Deutsche Illustrierte Zeitung (in German):
The first paragraphs of the article are missing. I think the other article about I Rantzau on the Web site, probably published at the end of 1892, provides more insight into the opera:
However, the article came with a beautiful full-page (27.8 x 37.4 cm) original engraving by Alb. Wirth, that you can contemplate in full here:
I like the German Gothic script (also called Fraktur) in which the article was written:
That script was used in Germany for almost all printed text since the first prints of the Gutenberg bible until 1941 when it was banned (the ban has since been left but the Germans did not go back to that script).
This article confirms the attention given to Mascagni in the years following the success of Cavalleria.
3. "Opera Makers of To-day", an article published in 1903 in Munsey's Magazine:
This article is interesting in part because Mascagni is referred to as the leader of the "nuova scuola", before Puccini, Leoncavallo, and Giordano. His picture is the most prominent in the whole article.
