I haven't done any research yet, but I would definitely be interested in trying to unearth some of those pictures. Speaking of libraries, of the pictures I linked in the original email, one is definitely available from the Library of Congress (I got the copy from them), and I believe the SF / Bushnell picture is there as well, although I haven't found it in their online catalogs.
It is quite possible that Mascagni was more photographed in his two months of presence in SF than in the rest of the tour, given his success there. Unfortunately the city burnt down in 1906, which may have had an impact on the survival of the pictures. I found this interesting view of the city soon after the earthquake and fire:
