I posted a new article: "Zandonai: Mascagni's 'Student'", by Konrad Dryden. The article tackles the relationship between Mascagni and Riccardo Zandonai:
Zandonai is the composer of the superb "Francesca da Rimini". I highly recommend this opera, in particular the DVD of the MET production which features Renata Scotto and Placido Domingo, as well as the live version sung by Magda Olivero and Mario Del Monaco.
The libretto of Francesca was also written by Gabriele D'Annunzio, the librettist of Mascagni's Parisina. Note, by the way, what Zandonai thought of Parisina (see the article). It never ceases to amaze me to consider how misunderstood Mascagni's art was, in particular when it comes to such a masterpiece as Parisina!
