Dear list,
A couple of web site updates:
1. Mascagni.org presents an interesting document obtained from the New York Public Library: a beautiful reproduction of the short contract signed between Mascagni and Liebler & Co in 1902 relative to the composition of the incidental music for The Eternal City. The document, with transcription of the Italian text and English translation, is available here:
http://www.mascagni.org/pictures/eternal-contract
The document is also available through the Mascagni.org book reader, where you can access it in higher resolutions:
http://www.mascagni.org/book-reader/image/507459/1/0
As we know, Mascagni delivered and produced music for the play. Today, the orchestral music is lost, but the piano score still exists.
(Note that Mascagni.org obtained the right to publish the document,
but that NYPL owes the rights to the reproduction, even though the
document dates back from 1902. Please do not reproduce without
authorization.)2. A new article is also available: a contemporary account of the premiere of Parisina published in 1913 in a German music magazine. The article is available in English translation as well as in original German:
http://www.mascagni.org/articles/thieben-1913-parisina-en
After a detailed synopsis of the plot, the author gives his impression of the premiere of the opera, mainly from a musical standpoint. A good read, the author recognizing the high value of the opera, and saying that "the verdict of the audience on Mascagni's latest work was decidedly favorable."
You can find more articles on Mascagni.org's articles page:
http://www.mascagni.org/articles/
There are more articles and translations in Mascagni.org's pipeline, but submissions of original (or recently published) articles as well as older articles are more than welcome.
Enjoy,
-Erik
