I just came across a short article about "Raging Bull", Martin Scorsese's movie, which mentions briefly the music of Mascagni:

This is the interesting quote:
"Marty didn't just want the 'Intermezzo' from (Pietro Mascagni's) 'Cavalleria Rusticana' for the film," Schoonmaker said. "Once he decided on it, he wanted the exact recording that had been his personal favorite for years."
As you may know, "Raging Bull"'s soundtrack features, in addition to the Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, the Barcarolle from Silvano, and the Intermezzo from Guglielmo Ratcliff. This is detailed in the Mascagni.org FAQ:
