I seem to remember that the documentary accompanying the special edition DVD of Raging Bull mentions the fact that Scorsese grew up hearing the music of Mascagni playing from gramophones in the tenements of his youth. This probably inspired the wonderful "flashback" sequence with the Silvano Barcarolle. The other use of the tranquil Cav Intermezzo and Ratcliff Sogno to accompany some of the more horrific and violent fight sequences was pure directorial genius.
