All,

Unless I am wrong, I sent the last Mascagni newsletter a year ago. It
is definitely time for an update. Here are the topics of the day:

1. Pietro Mascagni passed a way 52 years ago

Today is August 2, the anniversary of Mascagni's passing in
1945. The Goldoni Theater in Livorno (Mascagni's hometown) has an
article in Italian to commemorate this event:

As always, I recommend that you play some Mascagni music to
   celebrate!

2. Mascagni videos on YouTube

Several people have pointed out to me that some very interesting
videos of Mascagni just appeared on YouTube. I suspect that these
videos were copied from www.archivioluce.it, where I had seen them
a while ago. YouTube makes it much easier to watch them however.

Mascagni composing a part of Nerone in the 1930s:

A war-era (probably) film with Mascagni conducting Silvano, an
aria from Isabeau with Gigli, and the Hymn of the Sun:

News about Mascagni conducting Cavalleria in 1940:

These excerpts are absolute treasures. One just wishes the sound
was not missing for most of the second video.

3. If everything goes well, I will attend a performance of Amica in
French in Martina Franca (south of Italy) this weekend. Here is the
announcement of the event on Mascagni.org:

"The Martina Franca (Italy) festival will present two
performances of Amica on August 4 and August 6 2007. The
performances will be in French, the language of the original
libretto written by French editor Choudens, and will likely be
the first performances in French of Amica since its premiere in
      1905.

The libretto was adapted in Italian by Mascagni's long-time
friend and librettist, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti. However, the
music was written to the French text, which makes these
performances an important milestone in the history Amica."

4. Zanetto, Ode a Leopardi, and scenes from Mascagni's operas

The Goldoni Theater in Livorno will perform Zanetto and Ode a
Leopardi (AKA the symphonic poem "A Giacomo Leopardi") on October
   30, 2007.

In addition, scenes from several of Mascagni's operas will be
performed on October 25, 2007. The information in Italian is
   available here:

That is it for this time! Enjoy,

-Erik
