Hi Duane & list, Guglielmo Ratcliff has indeed some wonderful music. One of my favorite parts is Margherita's narration at the beginning of Act IV:
E bella, bella era tua madre, E chiamata venìa, per la sua grande Beltà, la Bella-Elisa. Avea capelli D'oro puro, avea mani d'alabastro, Occhi... Can you imagine this put in music? Well, Mascagni did it in his enthusiasm for Heine's text. The rendition is beautiful in the old Cetra recording: http://www.mascagni.org/recordings/3001 There is by the way a video (amateur I think) of a performance in Livorno in 1984. The image quality is absolutely terrible! Definitely keep us posted if the Ratcliff project comes to fruition! -Erik PS: All, I apologize for the garbage you may see at the top of some emails sent to the list. I've been fighting with those for a while. I resent the last message to try to make it work correctly. This is not the original sender's fault. > Hi Erik > > I just love your updates and webpage, they're really great. > Hope you were able to get the Zandonai book OK. > > I'm planning to do Guglielmo Ratcliff possibly in 2004 > if next year's Respighi (Maria Vittoria in its U.S. Premiere) > works out.
