How We Use Social Media During Emergencies [INFOGRAPHIC]
http://mashable.com/2011/02/11/social-media-in-emergencies/

The use of social media during national and international crises, both
natural and political, is something that Mashable has followed with great
interest over the past few years.

As a culture, we started becoming more aware of the power of social media
during times of crisis, like when the Iran election in 2009 caused a
furor, both on the ground and on Twitter. More recently, the Internet and
social media played an important role in spreading news about the
earthquake in Haiti and political revolution in Egypt.

But what about other kinds of natural disasters or crime? Can social media
be used to good effect then?

In 2009, two girls trapped in a storm water drain used Facebook to ask for
help rather than calling emergency services from their mobile phones. At
the time, authorities were concerned about the girls’ seemingly
counterintuitive action.

However, according to new research from the American Red Cross, the
Congressional Management Foundation and other organizations, social media
could stand to play a larger and more formal role in emergency response.
In fact, almost half the respondents in a recent survey said they would
use social media in the event of a disaster to let relatives and friends
know they were safe.

Take a look at the data presented below, courtesy of CreditLoan, and in
the comments section, let us know how — or if — you would want to use
social media during an emergency.

Scott Walker's Top Anti-Worker Aide Target of FBI Raid;
Corruption in Walker's Administration?

A secret probe into political wrongdoing has swept up the point person on
the Wisconsin governor's anti-union efforts; will it reach the governor
himself?

When Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker took a phone call that he thought was
from billionaire campaign donor David Koch, he described the secret
meeting of his cabinet at which he outlined the budget repair bill that
stripped collective bargaining protections from public employees and
teachers, replaced civil servants with political cronies and made it
possible to sell off public utilities in no-bid deals with out-of-state
corporations.

.

.

E-mails obtained by the Center for Media and Democracy reveal that the
cabinet was indeed present for the meeting. The secretaries and
gubernatorial aides who were present are listed. But so, too, is one other
key player in the administration: the individual identified in e-mails
from key players in the Walker administration as the point person for the
governors push to radically restructure labor relations and state
governmenta project so significant to Walker that he declared, This is our
moment.

.

That person? Cynthia Archer, the subject of last weeks FBI raid, which
removed a crate of documents from her Madison home, collected her
computers hard drive and revealed to most Wisconsinites that a John Doe
probe has targeted key aides to Walker during his service as county
executive and governor. The probe remains secret, but leaks associated
with it suggest that the focus is political wrongdoing and corruption. One
top donor to Walkers 2010 gubernatorial campaign has already been put on
probation after admitting to felony violations of campaign finance and
money laundering rules.

.

The governor says he does not know anything about the inquiry beyond what
he has read in the press. But Walkers campaign, which remains a going
endeavor, has hired a former US attorneywith extensive experience dealing
with federal investigationsto respond to his a subpoena related to the
John Doe probe for email and other records. And that attorneys firm has,
according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, been paid more than $60,000.

Wisconsin leads the nation when it comes to cutting support for education.

.

Wisconsin has moved to take authority away from local elected school
boards and parents and to rest it with political appointees who respond to
Gov. Scott Walker and out-of-state groups that are spending millions of
dollars to undermine public education.

.

Wisconsins best and brightest teachers the Teacher of the Year award
winners have joined mass demonstrations to decry the assault by
politicians and their cronies on public education.

.

Whats Walkers response? He wants to tell the nation how to do the same.

.

Thats right. Walker has been invited to join governors from states across
the country for a special Education Nation panel session focused on
education and economic competitiveness, titledThe State of Education: The
Governors Perspective.

.

snip

.

Walker has no great story to tell about reforms in Wisconsin. Walker has
no great story to tell about bipartisan collaborations. Yet the governor
is spouting off about how he will tell his fellow governors a thing or two
about how to improve education.

.

What an epic example of arrogance!

.

It is no wonder that the only thing dropping faster than state support for
education in Scott Walkers Wisconsin is the governors approval rating.
