Hi,
Feeling a little worried about getting the new Student Information
System working for your department? Wondering how you can deal with
your new tightened budget through improving your current systems?
Then come out and learn how the best minds in the world solve systems
problems. JP Vainio, long time Agile Users Group member, will be
teaching us "systems thinking" - a well developed method for
understanding and continuously improving systems. Here's his description:
Systems thinking - a way to optimize everything you do
Analysis is defined in Merriam-Webster dictionary as “separation of a
whole into its component parts”. While this scientific method has
served us well, it has a few important shortcomings which become
apparent in situations where parts have many interdependencies. One
working definition of a system could be that “it is a whole that can not
be divided into independent parts”. This means that properties of a
system come from how the parts interact with each other - NOT from how
they act separately. Therefore traditional reductionist analysis does
not capture the essential properties of a system. Systems thinking is
an approach that focuses on how system’s parts interact. Complex
systems are everywhere so systems thinking can be applied to almost any
area of study or problem solving: e.g. economics, public policy,
organizations.
We are going to “kick the tires” of systems thinking with Monty Hall
Paradox and then continue to other examples “closer to home”.
I bumped into this delightful Nit Wit animation on systems thinking. I
will include it here for a good laugh.
