Jeana, I would suggest reading up on various 'jobs' that coaches are asked to do. Some suggestions are: Janet Allen - Becoming a Literacy Leader has some fabulous suggestions. Cathy Toll - The Literacy Coach's Survival Guide is another good one that may answer some questions for you. Synchronizing Success by Maren Koepf is an excellent book on being a change agent and making continuous improvement through continuity, collaborative leadership and continuous professional development. Pinnell and Lyons with Systems for Change in Literacy Education discuss professional development. And my last suggestion is Jan Miller Burkins - Coaching for Balance - she writes very much from the heart. I would also suggest looking on the IRA website because their definition of a literacy coach is very explicit. How exciting that this position is being opened in your district.
