#1 "How to keep your car from becoming a statistic!"
======================================================================

For as long as there have been cars, there have been thieves focused on stealing it. Today is no different. The rising popularity of customized vehicles has been aided by the vast knowledge of product information available through the Internet.

As automotive enthusiasts, countless amounts of time, money, and effort are spent to improve either the look or performance of your car. After thieves get their hands on it, you're left with either a carcass of a vehicle, or if you're lucky, an undervalued check from your insurance company.

MyGoKart has compiled a few more tips and tricks that just might help keep that baby of yours from ending up in a chop shop. To all those paranoid owners of tricked out cars, this one's for you.

If you....

- triple check to see if you locked your car after leaving it
- think more than 10 minutes a day about the "safety" of you car
- get sick to your stomach leaving your car longer than 1 hour

.....you'll want to read on

Compiled below are typical AND not so typical ways to deter auto thieves. We say deter, because anything, and we mean anything, can and will eventually be bi-passed.

THE BASICS

Get an alarm - any reputable brand will work. Make sure that the install is clean. A bad install will compromise the effectiveness of your system.

Locking devices - this is a great way to deter amateurs. Just remember that steering wheels can be hacked off in seconds PLUS it only works if you lock it!

Valuables - don't leave them in the car! This includes leather jackets, electronics, faceplates, ANYTHING of value.

Location, location, location! - Don't park in isolated areas or unattended parking lots. High traffic and well lighted are the best options. Make your car visible! Don't park in-between 2 towering SUVs, Vans, Trucks, RVs......you get the idea.

Lock your car - this includes quick stops to the store, in front of the home, every chance you get.

Have enough gas - leaving your car stranded in the middle of nowhere can get you in trouble quickly. Just fill up often and don't let your gauge pass 1/4 tank.

Stickers - don't turn yourself into a mark. Remove alarm and performance stickers, which act as checklists for thieves. Knowing what kind of alarm you have can help them defeat it quicker.

ADVANCED PROTECTION

The following are more advanced techniques that will help prevent your car from being stolen. Sure they take a little more work, but they also give you the satisfaction of knowing that you've done everything in your power to slow thieves down.

Registration - keep it in your wallet away from your car.

Disengage door locks - windows can easily be pried and electronic door locks activated. Disengage them by disconnecting connectors. Yes, you won't have this convenience feature anymore, but I've seen how easy cars are being broken into using this technique. And don't forget to roll up your windows, even on hot days. Slightly cracked windows are easy targets.

Fuel pump kill relay - most alarms come with starter kills. The fuel pump relay kill switch is another device that decrease the chances of your car being driven off.

Hood locks - helps prevent access to your engine bay where thieves can easily disable your electrical system.

Lojack - it's an excellent way to get your vehicle back. The downside is that it's a more costly means of protection. Note that your car may come back stripped. It's been speculated that they come back stripped because it takes time to track (1) and cops are slow to react because they're using your car as bait (2).

Pager - alerts you immediately when your car has gone off. Gives you the adequate notification you need to check out what's happening with your car.

Move around - don't park in the same spot everyday. Predictability is definitely going to work against you when it comes to having your car stolen.

Keep your eyes open - check your mirrors and pay attention to potential thieves that tail you. Once they know where you park or reside, they may be back!

Curb your wheels - this will make towing your car off a little harder

Remove your license plate at car shows - this will keep your car from being easily identified when you do leave the showroom. Remember; a lot have people now know your exact set-up.
