I read the following analogy once, and although I neglected to remember the
gentleman's name, I was somewhat intrigued. Sure it's harsh; but it points
to the often ignored issue of personal responsibility with relation to young
people making a choice (to have sex)and not accepting or even considering
the potential responsibility that comes with it...

"You're standing by a river and you are seeing hundreds of babies and kids
floating by, headed for the rapids. You jump in and save a few but many of
them are swept out. Sooner or later, you say jumping in and grabbing them is
not the solution. You have to go upstream and find out who is throwing the
babies in the river. Who you find upstream will be the immature,
unsocialized, sociopathic parents who shouldn't be allowed to have babies."

This may come as a shock, but when I was in junior highschool in a small,
whitebread suburb outside of St. Louis in 1981, (not the INNER CITY), there
were kids I knew who were having sex at the age of 11 and 12. I no doubt
imagine the age has decreased by now. Parents, teachers, clergy, whomever,
need to accept this and not debate it or ask why or how this could happen.
This particular case is either a young girl attempting to deny or cover up
the truth, or simply not knowing the "facts". The facts of life and the
pending personal responsibility need to be taught regardless of what
neighborhood you live in or what religious or cultural background you come
from - period.
